In the 1840s, Godfrey Barnsley created the grand estate and gardens known as Woodlands for his beloved wife, Julia—today, the grounds echo their once-in-a-lifetime love story. Tucked within 3,000 acres in the beautiful foothills of North Georgia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, the historic Barnsley Gardens remain at the heart of Barnsley Resort, creating a storybook setting for weddings.
Apart from the beauty of the estate and gardens, I (along with my couples) love Barnsley Gardens weddings for the space’s convenience. Since everything is connected on the property, it’s easy for couples and guests to stay, host a rehearsal dinner, hold a ceremony and reception, and get ready all in the same place. The Hushed Getting Ready Moments at a Barnsley Gardens Wedding
Before their vow exchange in front of their friends and family, Ashley and Geoff got ready throughout the Barnsley Gardens for a day they’ll remember forever.
Ashley and her bridesmaids got dressed and did hair and makeup in The Wheaton, a two-story, pet-friendly estate cottage with a wood-burning fireplace, pine floors, and a wet bar. It’s the perfect place for a peaceful wedding day morning. There are several other on-site suites and cottages for pre-wedding preparations, all within a short walk of the ceremony location.
Geoff and his groomsmen got spiffy in a downstairs room below The Ruins, the serene place they needed to prepare for the big day ahead, and let out any nerves.
Both spaces served the couple well, helping them start the day quietly and unhurried—just what they desired before the ceremony.
A Charming Ceremony at The Ruins in Barnsley Resort
The Barnsley Gardens shines when it comes to ceremony spaces.
- Birch Cottage is perfect for micro weddings, with a size of just 1,327 square feet. It’s quaint and charming as can be with dark hardwood floors, elegant vaulted ceilings, and plenty of natural light streaming in from every angle. The centerpieces of the room are two floor-to-ceiling wood-burning stone fireplaces, ideal for a cozy wedding when it’s cold outside.
- Georgian Hall boasts Southern charm at every corner. Best for indoor-outdoor weddings, this space has 9,000 square feet indoors and 8,350 square feet of outdoor space on the veranda and terrace. Highlights include the Savannah Ballroom, exposed trusses, a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, and dormer windows that let in natural light for beautiful photos.
- The Meadow is an expansive, open outdoor space with mountain views, designed for larger weddings and couples who want customizable decor, such as floral installations and arches.
- The Ruins is one of the most beautiful wedding venues at Barnsley Gardens. It’s what remains of the 19th-century Italianate villa and surrounding pavilion, and it still stands as a testament to Barnsley’s deep love and devotion to his wife. Arched doorways, tall windows, timeworn brickwork, and creeping ivy give the historic ruins an enchanting, almost castle-like character, while manicured lawns and winding paths bring a sense of timeless elegance to the grounds.
For Ashley and Geoff, it was an easy decision on where to hold their ceremony. The Ruins spoke to them from the start, and it perfectly held their love story and the new chapter unfolding. Geoff held back tears, and the guests held their breath as Ashley made the walk down the aisle—it couldn’t have been a more magical moment.
The ceremony space didn’t even need much decor since the ruins themselves were breathtaking. Ashley and Geoff opted for simple flower arrangements in corals and creams, along with white foldable chairs and a curtain backdrop that filled an archway, as they said, “I do.” The historic love story, and the one just beginning, could be felt by everyone in attendance.
Dancing the Night Away in the Barnsley Gardens’ Reception Space
Ashley and Geoff opted to convert The Ruins into their reception space as well, with the team at Barnsley Gardens handling everything. It was seamless in every way, and from my experience as a wedding photographer, that isn’t always the case.
The Barnsley Gardens also offer other reception areas around the property, including:
- Saylor Hall has two rooms, one with 225 capacity and the other with 48, and is a 2,670-square-foot space with elegant dangling chandeliers, a covered terrace, and a charming lobby. It’s also steps from the Birch Cottage if you have a ceremony there.
- Town Hall brings to mind an old alpine chapel, and it’s best suited for smaller receptions. At 1,080 square feet, it’s intimate and cozy with vaulted ceilings, wood-panneled interiors, and chandeliers that enhance the space.
Even spaces I previously mentioned, like the Birch Cottage and Georgian Hall, serve as incredible venues for receptions. I recommend touring the property beforehand and sharing your preferences with the team at Barnsley Gardens to find the best fit.
For Ashley and Geoff, the Barnsley Gardens team did a fantastic job converting The Ruins’ ceremony space into a warm reception area for guests and the couple. The reception tables were adorned with lush greenery, seasonal blooms in soft peach, blush, cream, and muted purple. Cane-backed chairs with softly draped linens made the space equally soft and inviting. To finish it off, the team added flickering taper candles and glass votives that glowed softly as the sun set and a hazy dusk settled over the space.
